Hold the end of the brake fluid tester in the brake fluid and wait until it registers a reading.
If it reads no more than 2 (2% water) then the brake fluid is fine for another year.
If it reads all the way up to 3-4 then the brake fluid is contaminated providing insufficient braking and needs to be changed.
